Why Specialized Fetal Ultrasound Imaging Matters

Ultrasound scanning is one of the most critical diagnostic pillars during pregnancy. It allows expectant parents and obstetricians to monitor fetal growth, assess anatomical development, confirm gestational age, and detect potential chromosomal or structural abnormalities at the earliest possible stage.

Dr. Ankita Rajesh Shah has completed advanced clinical fellowship training in Obstetrics and Gynecological Ultrasound from the internationally recognized Mediscan Institute, Chennai. She holds certification from the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF, UK) for Nuchal Translucency (NT) screening, guaranteeing rigorous quality control and diagnostic precision.

1. NT Screening Scan (11 Weeks to 13 Weeks + 6 Days)

The Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan measures the fluid space behind the fetal neck. Combined with maternal nasal bone assessment and biochemistry markers (PAPP-A & Free Beta-hCG), it calculates the risk for chromosomal conditions such as Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13).

2. Anomaly Scan / Level II Scan (18 Weeks to 22 Weeks)

The Anomaly scan is a detailed anatomical survey of the developing baby. Every organ system — including brain structures, face, spine, heart chambers, stomach, kidneys, limbs, and umbilical cord insertion — is systematically evaluated. Placental position and amniotic fluid levels are also assessed.

3. Fetal Echocardiography

Fetal Echocardiography is a focused ultrasound examination of the unborn baby's heart structure and blood flow. It is strongly indicated in pregnancies with maternal diabetes, history of congenital heart defects, IVF conception, or abnormal routine scan findings.

4. Color Doppler & Fetal Growth Monitoring

Late second and third-trimester growth scans monitor fetal weight gain, umbilical artery blood flow, middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler patterns, and placental perfusion. This is essential for managing Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and maternal preeclampsia.

5. 3D / 4D Gynecological Ultrasound

High-resolution 3D/4D ultrasound provides detailed volume visualization of uterine abnormalities (such as septate uterus, fibroids, adenomyosis) and ovarian pathologies (endometriomas, cysts, polycystic ovaries), aiding non-surgical and surgical treatment planning.
