Essential Preconception Health Checklist
Planning for a baby is one of life's most exciting chapters. Taking proactive steps 3 to 6 months before trying to conceive ensures that your body is in peak health, reducing pregnancy risks and providing your baby with the best possible foundation.
Preconception Checklist
1. Start Folic Acid Supplementation Early
Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is critical for early neural tube development (which forms the baby's brain and spinal cord during the first 28 days of pregnancy — often before a woman realizes she is pregnant). Taking 400 mcg of Folic Acid daily for at least 3 months prior to conception reduces Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) by up to 70%.
2. Key Pre-Pregnancy Blood Screenings
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): Checks for anemia (hemoglobin levels).
- Blood Group & Rh Factor: Identifies Rh-negative status requiring Anti-D prophylaxis.
- Rubella & Varicella Serology: Ensures immunity against German Measles, which can cause severe fetal birth defects if contracted during pregnancy.
- Thyroid Panel (TSH): Unmanaged hypothyroidism increases miscarriage risk.
- Fasting Blood Glucose / HbA1c: Screen for undiagnosed pre-diabetes.
- Thalassemia Screening: HPLC hemoglobin testing to rule out Thalassemia trait.
3. Review Medical & Medication History
If you have pre-existing health conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, hypertension, or diabetes, your doctor will adjust your prescription medications to pregnancy-safe alternatives prior to conception.
4. Achieve a Healthy Pre-Pregnancy BMI
Both underweight (BMI < 18.5) and overweight (BMI > 25) profiles can impact ovulation regularity and increase risks of gestational diabetes or preeclampsia. Balanced nutrition and moderate activity help optimize body composition.
